Massaging Athletes http://www.joyogastudio.com/articles/yoga-news-archives/massage-althletes What I learned from doing massage to over 3,000 Athletes

He was absolutely huge, standing at six foot five and a half, weighing in at 335 pounds. He was literally twice my weight and his muscles were sculpted from head to foot. His biceps were the size of my thighs. Can you say Paul Bunyan? When I stood next to him I looked like a Lilliputian. He was sent to me by his trainer who I've worked with on numerous occasions.

I've been doing massage therapy for a very long time, since 1975 to be exact. We're talking perhaps as many as 50,000 massage therapy sessions here, so what I've seen is hands-on practical and sometimes much different than what you read in books or hear in the classroom. Over that period I've noted some very interesting phenomenon. Here's just one of my clinical observations.

There are many different types of bodies; swimmers bodies, a dancer's body, a yoga body, a weight training body, even a bicycler's body. Every form of athletic endeavor creates the body that is perfect to compete in that arena. All have their purpose, their beauty and their practicality.

I know when you're thinking about a professional athlete like a tri-athlete or a football player; you're envisioning an individual that's forever in the gym training, getting strong, getting pumped, and developing endurance. You think of a body that is ripped and hard, traps that come up inches off the back in a perfect "V". Ironically, seasoned athletes have muscles throughout their body that are exactly the opposite of what you might expect, they are soft and buttery. Let me say that again. Really healthy muscles are soft, fluid and flexible. In fact, the only time their muscles are hard is when they are being flexed. At the moment of flexing they puff up like a blowfish, otherwise everything stays soft and pliable.

In my experience, an area of hard muscles indicates some form of injury or imbalance. You've heard me say it many, many times, "Rigamortis sets in way before you die." So I can be working on an entire body of this athlete and everything is beautifully soft and fluid throughout his musculature and then I'll come to that one spot that is hard, perhaps cold and that's "The Spot," the actual reason he has been sent to me. Left unaddressed that hardened, rigid, injured area will freeze up and influence that persons gait and performance and sometimes significantly.

So when an average person comes in for a massage, someone who maybe works out but not a professional athlete, they might present tight shoulders, neck, hip, or even hamstrings. All of these areas are places that are freezing up, getting old, hard, and stagnant. If they are not addressed in a timely manner, they too will influence the new emerging, imbalanced you and freeze you up in ways that are not in your best interest. Muscular hardness indicates imbalance.

When you look in the mirror, everything is supposed to sit perfectly aligned and balanced at right angles with each other. If you don't, maybe it's time to think about getting some quality bodywork.
